One dark winter’s evening a small group of May Hill Players and friends met in a chilly village hall for a play writing workshop.
Some were just interested in what the process of writing a play involves and others were looking to learn how to craft a script in order to earn royalties to keep them comfortable in retirement. A couple of weeks later the Drama Club was discussing possibilities for the Autumn production; the suggestion was put forward that the budding playwrights who attended the workshop could write it – all that was needed was an idea and an original plot
that half a dozen writers could collaborate on. After much head scratching the concept of the theme of the Seven Deadly Sins emerged with a writer being tasked to write a ten minute play themed on one of the Sins. Several ideas were discussed about how to link them and the idea of audience participation was thrown into the mix. It was agreed that each writer should direct their own play. So we had a theme, seven plots, seven writers, seven directors,
linking action, and audience participation . This seemed a little ambitious for first time writers and directors but an attitude of ‘there’s nothing wrong in being ambitious’ was adopted, which was just as well as we ended up with 36 roles to cast………
Sweat, tears, panic, coffee, alcohol, and loss of sleep have all played a part in the writing and production of The Seven Deadly Sins but it has also been fun and we have learned a lot. We hope we have crafted a production that you will find enjoyable.
The action opens when God and the Devil meet for one of their occasional games of chess. As usual when they meet they engage in some philosophical chat.
On this occasion they are also reviewing the new procedure for examining arrivals about whom a decision has to be made as to where they will spend Eternity The processing takes place in Departures where the attendant at the Check-in desk takes responsibility for issuing the Boarding Passes for the journey to the Ultimate Destination.
Up for judgement today are seven people each of whom is potentially guilty of one of the Seven Deadly Sins – Greed, Gluttony, Sloth, Envy, Pride, Wrath or Lust.
